Starting a business
Until modern times the main economic activity in Botswana was cattle farming or pastoralism, which formed the basis of the economy for most ethnic groups. The UN World Bank currently ranks Botswana as the third most developed country in Africa, which is a significant source of income.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries the diamond trade became the main source of revenue. With the discovery of diamonds, the economy was boosted for over a century until the early 1990s, when diamonds became increasingly scarce.
During the period of independence the government focused on agriculture to develop local industries, and this strategy led to a dramatic increase in agricultural output and a move away from the protectionist policies of the past.
About 80% of the population live in rural areas and the main livelihood is livestock farming. With a rapidly increasing urban population, most of the new jobs are in government-sector industries. Most of the growth has been in the service sector. Despite a shortage of qualified labour, this has not caused a major increase in labour costs.
The service sector's largest growth area is in education, including teaching and scientific research, and there are plans to create a national university.
The agricultural sector continues to grow rapidly., the largest single sector of the economy is agriculture, which makes up about 57.4% of total gross domestic product (GDP).
The sector is diverse, with crops ranging from milk, to sugar, to tea and tobacco, to vegetables. The major producers are in the communal areas. There is a long history of communal farming, in which ownership of land was given to farmers to cultivate.
